Ladies Beach

Nantucket, Massachusetts · Atlantic Ocean

Nantucket's quiet in-between south-shore beach

Tucked between Surfside and Cisco on the south shore. Less known and less visited than its famous neighbors. Named for the Victorian-era practice of gender-segregated swimming.

Ladies Beach takes its name from the late-19th-century practice of segregating the south-shore swim zones by gender — a custom long abandoned, but the name stuck. Today it's an in-between beach, tucked along the south-shore bike path between the buzz of Surfside to the east and the surf scene at Cisco to the west, and most days it's empty. There are no lifeguards, no restrooms, and a small free dirt lot. The waves break hard at high tide; rip-current risk is real. For a quiet south-shore walk with the dunes to your back and nothing on the horizon, Ladies is the move.

History

The name dates to the Victorian era when Nantucket's south-shore swim zones were informally segregated by gender.
