The Cape's unofficial main beach — big, warm, and social
The Cape's unofficial 'main beach' — big, popular, and social. Warm Nantucket Sound water, gentle waves, and a vibrant summer scene. Locals call it 'Muscle Beach.' Full facilities including bathhouse, showers, lifeguards, and food across the street. Four Seas Ice Cream is a must-stop.
Craigville Beach is the Mid-Cape's blockbuster — a long, wide stretch of Nantucket Sound sand that's been the social heart of summer for generations. The big lot fills by 11am on a sunny Saturday; the daily fee is $20 and the line of cars wraps onto Craigville Beach Road. Inside, you get everything a family wants: lifeguards, a full bathhouse with showers and changing rooms, volleyball courts, a concession (The Barnacle) across the street, and Four Seas Ice Cream half a mile away in Centerville village. The water is warm by late June and shallow well out, with only the gentlest chop most days. Teens cluster on the east end, families park themselves between the lifeguard chairs in the middle, and walkers head west toward Covell's. The sand is coarser than Cotuit's or Long Beach's — locals call it 'Muscle Beach' because the bigger grains aren't quite ideal for the under-five sandcastle crowd. Bring an umbrella; the only shade is the bathhouse porch.
History
Craigville's Christian Camp Meeting Association, founded in 1872, gave the village its name and shaped its summer cottage architecture.
