Cape Cod's signature bay beach — flats and sunset
At low tide, you can walk a quarter mile out on the tidal flats — kids love hunting for hermit crabs and sand dollars. The bay-side sunsets here are genuinely world-class.
Mayflower Beach is, by reasonable consensus, the most famous bay-side beach on Cape Cod. The tidal flats here are extraordinary: at dead low tide you can walk a quarter-mile out across firm wet sand laced with eelgrass channels and tidal pools, kids scattered everywhere hunting hermit crabs. At incoming tide the warm shallow water races back in, and by mid-afternoon on a clear August day the beach looks like a postcard come to life — striped umbrellas, families spread out across the flats, the sun shimmering on the bay. The town runs a full operation: large paved lot (sticker or daily fee), lifeguards in season, full restrooms, outdoor showers, a snack bar, and accessibility ramps. Sunset is the second act. Mayflower faces northwest, and the colors that spread across the bay on a clear evening — pink, orange, lavender, deep blue — are the reason Dennis is the place to be at the end of the day. Arrive by 9:30 a.m. on summer weekends; the lot fills by 11.
