Harwich's warm-water flagship
Harwich's top beach on Nantucket Sound. Consistently warm water, a long sandy stretch, and a neighborhood feel. Less flashy than some Cape beaches, which is exactly the point.
Red River Beach is Harwich's flagship — a three-quarter-mile stretch of fine sand on Nantucket Sound where the Red River empties through the dunes to create a tidal lagoon that kids treat as a private swimming pool. The water is genuinely warm by August (often 74°F), the surf is gentle to nonexistent, and the lot is the largest in Harwich, with both sticker and daily-fee sections. There's a full bathhouse, outdoor showers, a snack bar, and an accessible Mobi-mat to the lifeguard chairs. The Red River side of the beach has shallow tidal flats and a calm channel for tubing; the western end is sandier and quieter. Despite its size the lot fills by 10:30 a.m. on July weekends — arrive early or come for the long evening swim. Pair with dinner at Brax Landing on the harbor or a fried-clam stop at Bonatt's. The complete Cape sound-side family experience.
History
The Red River, which empties through the dunes here, gets its color from tannins released by the upland cedar swamp it drains — natural staining, not pollution.
