Monument Beach

Bourne, Massachusetts · Buzzards Bay

Bourne's classic Buzzards Bay family beach

A quiet, family-friendly bay beach that's one of the first stops after crossing the bridge. Calm, warm water and a laid-back vibe that feels like the real Cape before the tourist corridor kicks in.

Monument Beach is the first proper beach you reach after crossing the Bourne Bridge, and for visitors who think Cape Cod begins at Hyannis it's a useful corrective: warm Buzzards Bay water, calm protected swimming, an old-fashioned bayside vibe, and none of the parking-lot mania of the Mid-Cape. The beach sits on a small cove with a wooden pier extending out to a swim float, and on summer mornings you'll see kids dropping into the water off the pier in a continuous loop. There's a snack bar in season, lifeguards on duty, real restrooms, and a paved lot that takes Bourne stickers or daily fees. Monument was the summer-camp territory of Bourne for a century and still feels community-anchored: town concerts on the lawn behind the beach, fireworks over the bay on the Fourth, all of it.

History

Named after the monument to Captain Cornelius Vinal that once stood near the beach; the area was a Methodist summer retreat in the late 19th century.
