Wellfleet's walkable in-town harbor beach
Right in Wellfleet center near the harbor and town pier. More of a town beach than a destination beach — a convenient spot for a quick swim between gallery hopping and oyster eating.
Mayo Beach is Wellfleet's town beach — right in the center of the village, walking distance from Main Street, the Oyster House, and the working waterfront. It's not a destination beach; it's a town beach, the kind every Cape village should have. The sand is mixed with shell and occasional small stones, the water is the warmest in Wellfleet because the inner harbor traps the sun, and the swimming area is lifeguarded and family-sized. The town pier and Wellfleet Marina are right there, so the view includes oyster boats and pleasure craft coming and going; at low tide the harbor pulls back to reveal the working oyster flats. Parking is free in the town lots and along the harbor — a rarity on the Outer Cape — and a small Mayo Beach Park behind the beach has tennis courts and a playground. It's the right beach for a between-meals dip rather than a full beach day, and exactly what Wellfleet visitors need to keep their kids happy between gallery and oyster stops.
