Plan from Osterville

Osterville is the polished one — a small Barnstable village whose main street feels like a curated stage set of New England prosperity: linen shops, art galleries, a couple of solid restaurants, and the kind of well-tended trim that suggests the homeowners take their landscaping personally. It’s walkable in a way most of Cape Cod isn’t, and the boutique shopping is genuinely good if that’s your interest.

Dowses Beach is the village beach, set on a narrow spit between Nantucket Sound and the West Bay. The water is calm and family-friendly, the views toward Grand Island are striking at sunset, and the parking — like most Barnstable beaches — favors residents. Osterville isn’t a destination for nightlife or large families looking for cheap fun, but for couples and shoppers it’s one of the most pleasant village strolls on the Cape.
