Two miles of quiet sand on the Vineyard's far shoulder
A long, lonely stretch of sand on Menemsha Pond with views of the Elizabeth Islands. Popular with surf fishermen chasing striped bass and bluefish. Rarely crowded.
Lobsterville Beach is one of the Vineyard's most overlooked stretches — two miles of soft sand and dune on the north shore of Aquinnah, facing Vineyard Sound across the channel from Menemsha. Surfcasters work the bar at Dogfish Point for striped bass and bluefish in the cool hours of dawn and dusk, while families and birders share the rest of the day with piping plovers, least terns, and the occasional osprey wheeling overhead. There are no lifeguards, no restrooms, and no concessions — just a gravel pull-off where Lobsterville Road meets the dune line. Parking is genuinely scarce; locals often arrive by bike via the bike-ferry from Menemsha. The water is calm and shallow, warming through July into the high 60s, and the sunsets across the Sound toward Cuttyhunk are a quiet alternative to the more crowded Menemsha Beach across the inlet. Bring water, bug spray (greenhead flies peak in late July), and everything you'll need; this is a true low-amenity beach where the reward is solitude.
