Upper Cape
Falmouth is the Upper Cape's best all-around town, and it's not particularly close. The village center is walkable, attractive, and actually alive — shops, restaurants, ice cream spots, a village green, real foot traffic. It has the energy that most Upper Cape towns lack without tipping into the tackiness that can plague Route 28 corridors elsewhere. The Shining Sea Bikeway runs from Falmouth to Woods Hole and is arguably the best bike path on Cape Cod, tracing the coastline in a way that feels almost unreasonably scenic. Woods Hole itself — Falmouth's famous sub-village — is where the Martha's Vineyard ferry departs, and the tiny harbor town buzzes with a mix of scientists (thanks to the Oceanographic Institution), day-trippers, and ferry-goers that gives it a surprisingly cosmopolitan edge.
The beach situation here is legitimately excellent. Old Silver Beach is the headliner: a gorgeous west-facing beach with warm Buzzards Bay water, sandbars at low tide that create natural wading pools for kids, and sunsets that justify the brutal parking competition. Get there before 9 AM in July or don't bother. Surf Drive Beach is more mellow, with a long stretch of sand and a locals-know-it feel. Menauhant Beach on the Vineyard Sound side offers warmer water and a more relaxed crowd. The variety across Falmouth's beaches means you can match your mood to a specific spot, which is a luxury most Cape towns can't offer.
Dining in Falmouth punches well above the Upper Cape average. You've got legitimate sit-down restaurants with actual wine lists alongside the expected clam shacks and pizza joints. The nightlife won't rival Provincetown, but there are bars with live music, a couple of spots where you can close out a summer evening with a drink and not feel like you're the last person awake in town. Falmouth works for almost everyone — young couples, families, solo travelers, Vineyard day-trippers — and that versatility is its superpower. The tradeoffs are real but manageable: peak-season traffic in Woods Hole is genuinely miserable, Old Silver's parking lot fills to overflowing by mid-morning, and lodging prices reflect the town's popularity. But if you're picking one Upper Cape town and you want the best balance of beach, village, food, and things to do, Falmouth is the answer.
